The Ups and Downs

This week I wrote about the volatility of the markets and the toll it can take on companies. One of my favorite companies to watch is Blue Coat Systems (BCSI – NASDAQ), a Web security software provider based in Sunnyvale, California. BCSI is a king when it comes to share price volatility. While the 5-year chart tells a bit of the story one really needs to take a look at the specific share prices at various times over the past 4 years to appreciate the roller coaster ride that this company has ridden.

January 3, 2003 – $3.85
January 2, 2004 – $22.10
April 4, 2004 – $64.16
August 11, 2004 – $10.41
January 31 2005 – $25.75
May 2, 2005 – $13.93
November 11, 2005 – $52.01
February 16, 2006 – $18.95
July 21 2006 – $13.67
July 19, 2007 – $55.53

Now that’s volatile!
When investors look at BCSI they think high-risk, high reward.
