Blog buzz on- and offline this week

It's snowing social media in Toronto with a week of non-stop web 2.0 type events. Here are some things I've been hearing (not necessarily my opinion), both online and off:

  • There are too many bloggers blogging about blogging: move on to something more interesting.
  • Non-blog-believers are happy to join the online conversation so they can dis it.
  • There is a critical difference between fake blogs and storytelling (willing delusion).
  • Every PR agency in town is either in the social media space, talking about it, or thinking about it.
  • Most PR agencies have some serious non-blog-believers.
  • Advertisers and media outlets are finally starting to talk about declining ad watching.
  • The models are evolving; stop laying down the blog rules.

But the one I've heard the most, probably because I've chatted to senior execs at about five of our competitors in the last two days, is: Those of us who take the risks in this space first are probably going to make mistakes, and we should be careful about criticizing others' mistakes.

This is a new space - the rules are amorphous at best, and always evolving. Of course there will be many mistakes/missteps, whatever you choose to call them, but I think 2 things are really important to segment out from under the "criticism" label:

    1. It's not the mistake people remember - it's how you handle it. And here you must be honest, open and careful in the handling.

    2. Asking the blogosphere to turn a blind eye to missteps is never going to happen, not for PR agencies, and certainly not for their clients. See point #1.

(From someone who has made her fair share of bloggy mistakes - and lived to tell the tale).

Great points Maggie. In a few years when we look back, we'll likely find most agencies will have mis-stepped somewhere in the blogosphere. But those who handled things badly, or didn't learn from their mistakes will be the ones we remember.
