Emap creating "Digital Directors"

Brand Republic reports that magazine publisher Emap has scrapped the role of publisher and is set to appoint three digital directors to head its radio, specialist and lifestyle divisions, all in an attempt to double their digital revenues over the three years to the end of 2008.

As news moves more and more online, it is inevitable that we will see other publishers following suit.

Please God, let's just hope they don't decide to create a social networking site.

Scrapping the Publisher? Are we to believe that mediation through paper will soon be no more? Its amazing to think (or maybe I am just severely out of the loop) that a publishing company would go to such lengths as to scrap a role that is so symbolic, in an attempt to re-address its priorities and maximise penetration into the digital market. Is it really a case of out with the old, in with the new? Won't a substantial proportion of the role's skill-set remain exactly the same and, if so, doesn't that make this kind of move as much a bit of PR and lip service, maybe a showcasing of tech-savvyness, as it is a restructuring initiative?
