Has the memory of Johnny Cash been hijacked by phonies?

Judging what's real and what is not, who's good and who's bad, who is sincere and who is lying, is surely more difficult than ever.

The new Johnny Cash video God's Gonna Cut You Down features dozens of musicians and actors, all dressed in black as a tribute to the man. Kate Moss, Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop, Jay-Z, Keith Richards, Bono (of course) ... it's like a who's who of cool.

And it looks stunning.

But I can't help wonder why do it? Are they all just trying to associate themselves with the coolest man to have walked the planet?

Holden Caulfield would have called them phonies. That was my first reaction.

But I want to fight against it.

Stunning to be sure... but sadly reminds me of a Gap ad.
