Can Rock save the planet?

It’s claimed Al Gore’s latest venture, a 24-hour series of rock concerts set for 7 July, could be seen by two billion people.

Those who regularly read this blog might think me flippant or self-indulgent for writing about rock n’roll in a serious blogging community.

But I’m dead serious.

Rock n’roll is the greatest communications channel. Rock has been harnessed in the cause of Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Third World debt, AIDS, and now the power of Rock is set to be harnessed to save us from Global Warming.

"In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people," Gore said.

How do you reach billions? Music.

I bet these seven concerts won't be carbon neutral!

    How original.

If Gore is truly concerned about the climate I would suggest he try a more sustainable method of reaching out to billions while setting a good example.  This is merely a PR stunt since he fell from the radar a while.

Although he claims he is not running in the 2008 election, his PR stunt may be in an effort to illustrate the Democrats as progressive and green.  Anyone remember Clinton's Rock the Vote?

I'm a bit skeptical of charity rock festivals following the Make Pverty History festivals - didn't performers received $20,000 worth of luxury goods for performing? Seems a bit contradictory to me.
