Exploring Facebook

By Ian Barr

Attachment: Facebook.JPG (17170 bytes)

I’ve noticed a continual bombardment of Facebook requests amongst my peers and colleagues since the start of mid-December. To date, 112 people I know (or acquaintances in some cases) have been added as ‘friends’. People who I haven’t seen in 10+ years are coming out of knowhere and finding me. I’ve even been contacted by reporters and, in some instances, PR students who are curious about our company.

As a means of promoting our TechKnow blog, I’ve added the feed to my ‘notes’ section. Facebook continually updates the blogroll on my profile exposing it to everyone in my network, potential new readers.

I see a huge opportunity for human resources departments to directly interact with up and coming talent. I just discussed this with our head of recruitment in Canada, showing her the benefits of creating a profile and joining various ‘PR Groups’. In doing so, she can sign up to be a member of these groups, learn about grassroots events and post job opportunities on the discussion boards. This is particularly helpful for sending out job notices in markets that have a limited talent pool – go directly to the source.

Last night I was on one of these boards and noticed that someone (a teacher I presume) had posted our logo on an events listing which highlighted an info session that my office holds on the last Friday of every month.

In order to fully understand emerging technologies and the benefits, I feel it’s important for PR professionals to ‘dive in’ and try things out. I hope to have every member of our team on Facebook, MySpace, etc. in the near future; most already are members. I find it encouraging.

If you have any comments about the service or additional ideas about how to use Facebook, comment below. If you’re currently a member of Facebook and want to chat, look me up.

As Ian knows, I met him through Facebook.  It can be a useful tool in the hands of the right PR professional, and many of us there are already exchanging information and ideas.

On a social note, I did have an add request from someone I was in grade 5 with and hadn't heard from since.

Nice to see you reading the blog Omar. Perhaps I'll see you at one of our Friday info sessions?

While perusing the Hill & Knowlton website, I was immediately struck by BLOGS on the menu, then your BLOG.  I am so impressed.

I also am amazed by the general, continuing resistance to having these Profiles and using them as vehicles for PR.  Once one learns how to filter the noise, there are indeed many opportunities out there.

Thanks for posting such an interesting topic.

Hi Beverly - thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the post.

There are indeed some fantastic things that companies can be doing with social networking sites such as Facebook, Hi5, myspace, etc..

I think some people resist it out of fear.  They may not understand it and aren't willing to invest the time to recognize the true potential.

The comments I hear most are definitely fear-based.  "Too many weirdos out there." or  "It's only for kids."  Truth is, it probably shouldn't and probably was never intended to be for kids.  Networking on this level is primarily an adult activity.

While MySpace started out as networking for Bands (OK, there are alot of kids in bands, but let's not digress), there is now hardly a movie star OR TV Show that doesn't use it as a means of having contact in some form with fans.  Too many other examples to list here.

Now, in this Global community, MySpace actually becomes the outreach source for the LOCAL COMMUNITY.  I regularly receive messages and input from people from the Monterey Peninsula to San Francisco.  And I confess, I regularly send out very casual & conversational pr through that local channel.

Ah, but I'm preaching to the choir now.  I'd be interested to know if your HR tries this out on the grassroots level and what degree of success they meet.

    And good luck to YOU.

I'm happy to tell you that our head of HR created a Facebook account today. I'm going to work with her next week to show her the 'lay of the land', sign her up for relevant groups, etc.

I'll give you an update in a few week's time Beverly.

Milky Barr, remember me? You visited us over at H&K. If you're back in the UK, give me a bell and I'll get Stef out for a beer.

    All the best,
