Policies and guidelines for employee blogging
23 June 2005
The US edition of PR Week contains an analysis of employee blogging, deftly summarised by Neville Hobson. Two things stand out for me.
“…the firm [Edelman] recently surveyed 120 global companies about their employee communication trends and discovered that only 30% have a policy on employee blogging.”
Wow – that many! So why don’t we know about them? According to this there are 36 multinational companies missing out on the opportunity to make a positive contribution (not to mention get some good publicity) from sharing their employee blogging policies with others. Sounds like a perfect job for the site Mark Jen proposed to collect all the different policies in one place. At the very least, Edelman should name the 30-odd companies that actually have policies.
“Surprisingly, some of the biggest tech companies are among those without a policy on employee blogging.”
Hmm – how about some of the biggest PR agencies? If we’re going to start pointing fingers, surely we have to get our own house in order first to gain some trust and credibility. I’d really like to see some of the key players in our industry publish their own policies and lead by example, before preaching to everyone else.
