My 2006 blog resolution
06 January 2006
This holiday break, as holiday breaks tend to do, has made me think a lot about life, work and blogging (naturally) and what I want out of each.
To date my focus on this blog has been to talk a lot about business blogging communities, and specifically share some of my experiences in setting up Collective Conversation for Hill & Knowlton. On occasions I have highlighted bad practice as a way to encourage best practice and the rest, quite frankly, is nothing more than a regurgitation of stuff I find interesting.
For 2006, I need a different focus. Whilst I’m not referring only to blogging here, on that front I am going to make some changes.
The main change will be my editorial direction. I want to move away from the negative and start highlighting the positive impact of technology in marketing and communications (ask anyone who knows me, and you will realise that this is not as easy at it might appear). We are finally starting to hear some success stories, and – in lieu of any hard ROI measurements – I think my readers (and colleagues) will be interested in learning about them.
Secondly, I’m going to clean up my categories. There is a lot of overlap, and I find myself assigning posts to either every category or none of them.
Thirdly, the name of this blog needs to change. Marketing Technology is OK as a broad topic (and I do still consider myself a marketing or communication technologist), but I need something that more closely reflects my renewed focus. Suggestions welcome – just post a comment below.

Consider using keywords that also help with who you are targeting. It’s not just about getting higher search terms, but also relevancy. I’d definitely consider SEO issues as part of your naming selection process.
I like the idea of focusing on the positive. Though sometimes slip up’s help to teach the rest of us what not to do. Generally in the industry, we do need more examples of how companies use corporate blogging and their results.
As for suggestions, corporate blog marketing, and blogging goals come to mind.

Thanks for the advice, John. I like the idea of something around goals and results.

How about RSS marketing? Personally I think it will be huge…bigger than corporate blogging.
Also, positive is a good thing. It’s one of my resolutions as well. There are so many negatives to point out it’s easy to focus on them.
Cheers from Seattle and best wishes for your 2006.

As with all resolutions, my
latest has fallen a little beside the wayside due to working commitments…
