New Teens Study About Life, Friends, Blogging and More

Welcome to 2008, another year where content will continue to be king.  If you didn’t know it already, if you are targeting a youth audience/mindset you need to be including in the mix some type of content creation component.  Over the holidays I found time on plane rides to review the latest Pew Internet & American Life report, this one focusing on teens and social media.  The project has been going on for about 8 years now, looking at the impact of the Internet on teens.  It always has a wealth of great insight and a must-read for anyone trying to understand the life and times of the youth world.

Their latest report looks at teens and social media, showcasing how teens embrace the conversational nature of interactive online media.  More and more teenagers are posting photos, diaries, videos and art online, thanks in part by social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.  According to the report, almost two-thirds of online teens have created something online, whether it’s a personal Web page or a remixed video.  The report also found that 39% of online teens have shared personal art, photos, stories or videos on the Net, up from 33% in 2004. Almost 30% are blogging, up from 19% in 2004. And 26%, up from 19%, have remixed content (i.e., mashups) using content they find online and turning it into something different.  

The report has lots of stats to check out, like only 14% of teens sending emails daily (their least popular use of staying in touch).  21% connect through friends via sites like Facebook and MySpace where you can send personal or private messages.  Instant Messaging is still strong with 68% of teens calling it their most popular way to stay in touch with friends, down from 75% in 2004.  And teen girls and blogger more than boys but boys are twice as likely than girls to post a video online.
