Dancing Girls and Guys Hit London’s Liverpool Station For T-Mobile

19 January 2009

Yes, of course, I’m a big fan of flashmobs.  I totally think all of us should get together with our friends once every three months to do our own flashmob fun – someone has to entertain the rest of the people on the planet.

Thankfully some brands and marketing peeps don’t care if something has been done before, some things are made to be repeated and hats off to T-Mobile in the UK who staged a fun one this week.  Although, maybe its best described as a staged dance routine and not a flashmob as the people that participated tore it up and obviously have had major practice sessions and didn’t just show up and wing it.  The dance routine – in busy London’s Liverpool station – was created for T-Mobile as part of their campaign themed on “life is meant for sharing.”  So the gist of the marketing plan – lets have fun with London and put on a show that will get people talking and sharing the fun.  Love it.

I think this is a good example when a client says “i’ve seen that before” when you present an idea to them.  More than likely most ideas are inspired by other ideas – its how the great creative brain works.  So I’m guessing the marketing guys presented this concept to T-Mobile and someone may have said that flash mobs or big dance routines have been done before, what else you got?  Luckily, the marketing peeps stood strong – saying that while similar efforts have been done, they haven’t been done like this, with this music, with these people, with this marketing campaign.  Bless them for their efforts because I love random things like this that get people talking, remind us that we’re all goofy and actually put a nice halo around T-Mobile for sponsoring the fun.  Take a few moments to watch the dancing craziness down below.

Now, if only I can find the right brand who will let me and 100 of my closest friends re-enact the cheerleading routine in Bring It On and mash it up with the final drum-off scene in Drumline (and get paid for it).  One day! :-)

AWESOME! Life IS meant for sharing. And, T-Mobile did a great job of leveraging London’s diverse demographic. I can’t wait for the Olympics!!!

I love the guy with the fro too.

This did look like lots of fun. I’m sure by now you heard about what this commercial inspired – http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/02/09/uk.station.flashmob/. And for the core of the fun check out the Facebook group which has 11,000 members (http://tinyurl.com/bmhgus)
