New roles

posted by Scott McKenzie

I seem to have more and more roles these days. And as a consequence more responsbilities. In the recent weeks and months I have become or will be a best man, an usher, a godfather, an uncle, second team captain, etc, etc. The list just seems to be getting longer.

This morning I was talking to my colleague Lee Smith about another new role – my decision to take over from Lee as the Chair of CIPR Inside.  We talked about our shared vision for CIPR Inside. We talked about the importance of integrating internal and external communciations. About the clear link that internal comms has with business results. About the need to spread and share best practices.

But in fact we talked more about our shared joy of  becoming fathers (yet another role!). I reflected that my 10 week old daughter has already started to communicate. She knows exactly when she wants to stand, or eat, or get a cuddle. All done without saying a word.

If only we were all able to be so efficent with our communications!

I will be talking more about these themes, my various roles and my daughter over the coming weeks and months. I hope you will share your thoughts on what I have to say.

Welcome to the blogosphere Scott! It’s great to have your voice as part of the online conversation at last and I’m looking forward to reading (and commenting on) your musings over the coming months…

Chairing CIPR Inside and blogging are two new roles that I know from experience will keep you VERY busy – but they are no comparison to the little joys, challenges, milestones and delights that come with being a new dad. Enjoy them all and don’t lose sight of which roles are most important – there’s only so many balls we can juggle!

All the best.

Lee

Mate, I don’t know how you do it. Speaking as a new Dad also, I don’t even have time to tie my shoelaces at the moment.

I’m delighted you’ve started this blog, and, just to add a little pressure, I’ve reignited my own blog and added you to the still-formative Blogroll!

Thanks Phil I’m delighted that you’re blogging again. I assume it will pay homage to all things to icons like Dylan and Cash just as before?

Scott, I had no idea your spare time wasn’t singularly consumed with your new daughter. Thanks for inviting me to your blog. As someone from across the pond I am interested in what CIPR Inside is. I’m also interested in Dylan and Cash, although these days I would give my first and only born to get my hands on tickets to Leonard Cohen’s concert in London in October. Couldn’t buy a ticket for less than $800 CDN anywhere in Canada so didn’t even try.
