From God to Guide…

As I mentioned in my previous blog I spent two days at the Melcrum Employee Engagement conference last week.

I’ve taken a day or two to reflect on what I took away from the event. The key themes for me were:

  • The need to make effective use of budget in difficult conditions
  • The importance of being able to measure the effectiveness of your comms
  • Even in these cost-conscious times there is still loads of room for innovation in terms of content, channels and delivery (and it doesn’t necessarily need to be driven by technology)
  • That starting conversations within organisations is as relevant as ever. Probably more so.

Highlights included:

  • The good people at Gallup presented a compelling case on why measuring engagement is so important – it really does impact on the bottom line. I would certainly recommend their Q12 approach.
  • Vodafone and our friends at The Edge showed how they can really drive emotional engagement using film-making to make the connection between employees and customers.
  • Virgin Media gave a sparkling presentation on their use of social media and other channels to drive pride and excitement in their brand. Interestingly the person I sat next to looked at me sadly and said she wished her organisation  could do some of those things… To which my answer was that she could. She just needs to cut her cloth accordingly. More on that in future blogs.

Perhaps the most impressive speaker was Geoff Walker from the Sandwell Community Caring Trust. Geoff is actually their CEO as opposed to Director of Comms but you would struggle to find a more passionate advocate of the power of employee engagement. He talks about leadership being a “mutual investment”. That leaders should not just “engage” when they need something.

Geoff is very quotable but perhaps my favourite phrase he used is that as communicators we need to help our leaders transition from ”god to guide”.

I am sure there are many of you who can empathise with this point…
